Fundamentals of Project Management  

 

Introduction

Project management tools and techniques help in conceptualizing projects, initiating project development, arranging project management tasks at various levels, establish resource requirements and finally deliver the projects on time and with the estimated costs and for the mentioned scope of the project. Therefore, any adverse impact on the performance of one subproject or tasks can impact the performance of the whole project and it will impact the business performance of the company. Professionals working in large organizations should clearly understand the fundamentals of project management so that they can understand the impact of their own performance on the overall business process of an organization.

The course is designed for one day of intensive training. The training course will focus on basic project management techniques, such as defining project scope, developing project breakdown structure, assigning resources, assessing costs and time requirements, resource leveling, and evaluating the progress of the project.

b) Nine areas of Project Management process
c) Detailing project management tasks
d) Project network analysis, project schedules and project crashing
e) Project resource management
f) Project Risk Management
g) Project Performance Measurement and Evaluation with Earned Value Management

METHODOLOGY
Presentations would be made through MS PowerPoint slides and hard copies of cases. Short case studies will be presented to highlight the knowledge areas. Instruction would be interactive and participatory. The participants are expected to draw the relation between the project management practice and their organizational activities through the case studies provided by their organization.  

Trainer(s)

Associate Professor Pokharel, Shaligram

Dr. Shaligram Pokharel has taught project management course in Nanyang Technological University. He has also done research on allocation of resources for constrained projects. He was invited by IBM-Singapore to give a keynote on “What is a successful PM?” in March 2006 to their PM workshop. Dr. Shaligram Pokharel holds a BE in Mechanical Engineering (from India) and MASC and PhD in Systems Design Engineering (from Canada). Dr. Pokharel has overseen various projects during his work as energy planner.

The training is designed for junior to mid level professionals in a company, who have no formal knowledge on project management process, as well as Managers and Engineers who are looking to increase their skills in projects.
